I recently got a Mac Mini to use as a server. I initially thought that since macOS is based on Unix, it would be pretty much like Linux — just set it up and go. But once I actually started using it, I ran into quite a few pitfalls. Here’s a record of the main issues.
Sleep & Power Settings
The default power management strategy on a Mac Mini is quite different from a desktop Linux machine. After the screen turns off for a while, the system automatically enters sleep. When sleeping, the network connection drops, SSH goes down, and all services go offline.
The solution involves two steps:
Disable auto-sleep in System Settings: Go to “System Settings” and turn off every option related to “sleep”. The keywords might also be “Energy Saver” or “Battery”.
Use an anti-sleep tool: Even with system sleep disabled, the system may still go to sleep under certain circumstances. It’s recommended to use an anti-sleep app from the App Center (e.g., KeepingYouAwake, Amphetamine) to keep the system awake. These tools run in the menu bar and prevent the system from sleeping.
If you skip these two steps, your server will keep going offline — pretty frustrating.
Xcode Dependencies & System Version
This is one of the biggest differences between macOS and Linux. Many command-line tools depend on Xcode Command Line Tools, and Xcode itself must be obtained through the Mac App Store.
Here’s the annoying part: if your system version isn’t the latest, you may not be able to download/update Xcode from the App Store. So the first thing to do after getting a Mac Mini is to upgrade to the latest macOS.
Also, all of this requires an Apple ID to be signed in. While macOS doesn’t force you to link an online account with your local account (which is better than Windows), you must log into the App Store to download Xcode. This means a Mac server needs an Apple ID — something easily overlooked during initial setup.
GUI Dependency
Although macOS is a Unix-like system, many critical operations can’t be done purely through the command line. Installing Hermes is one example.
During execution, the Hermes installation script tries to install dependencies like python3, but the confirmation prompt doesn’t appear in the terminal — instead, a GUI dialog pops up. If you don’t have a monitor connected, this dialog just sits there waiting, and the installation process hangs.
Similar situations include:
- The first time you run certain tools that require permissions, the system shows a security prompt dialog.
- Logging into Apple ID and downloading Xcode also require a GUI.
- System updates sometimes pop up GUI confirmation dialogs.
So during the initial setup phase, it’s best to keep a monitor connected for configuration, and only go headless after the basic environment is set up.
Summary
The Mac Mini can indeed serve as a server, but macOS is fundamentally a desktop system — its flexibility sits somewhere between Windows and Linux. If you’re used to the pure command-line management style of a Linux server, you need to be prepared: sleep settings must be handled manually, software dependencies come with Apple ecosystem lock-in, and the initial setup inevitably requires a GUI.
That said, the benefits are clear: low power consumption, compact size, and virtually silent operation. As a home server, the hardware is solid. Once you get past these hurdles, it’s a pretty stable server platform.
